The Strange Brew van pulled onto Historic Route 40 highway headed for Donner Pass and spirits were high. This having much to do with the fact that the date was April twentieth and we were headed for the 4th annual Gremlin Gamez event. In typical Strange Brew fashion, we were running quite late.

The slow Easter Sunday morning began with mimosas and a plethora of Easter spliffs in Kings Beach. Finally, the boys packed into the van and we headed on our way. We only backtracked once in the process of picking up Tommy, Freddy and a couple of young hitchhikers headed for the hot springs in Sierraville.

While stopped at a small market near Donner Lake Tommy got an alarming phone call from Brady. All our high spirits fell low and turned to butterflies when we found out that our whole snowboard community’s good friend Jeremy “Lemi” Landy was being air lifted out of the Gamez.

Lemi fearlessly mobbed into the last berm of the speed run that he played a big part in building. He slipped out of the berm and flew straight for the rocks, injuring his head.

With the mood changing news we raced for the site of the Gremlin Gamez to find the helicopter just before it took off. The helicopter flew directly over us, and the heavy wave of reality hit; our friend was actually hurt. And his absence would surely be felt at the Gamez.

The Gremlin Gamez nonetheless went off as Lemi no doubt would have wanted. There were dogs, boarders, partiers, stoners, beach chairs, tunes, Sac kids, Bay kids, beers, and an abundance of Heem and spliffs. Everyone shredded the Gremlin built course consisting of a spine, hips, a snake run, hippie hop, and a tree gap. Homeboy even did a back one through the trees. That was G!

When the sun lowered and everyone was successfully faded and sun burnt, the crowd begun thinning out. This wasn’t quite the end of the 2014 Gremlin Gamez though. Diehards and late arrivals continued boarding and partying while others cleaned up and stumbled out. Of course, no Gremlin Gamez would be complete without a double backflip from Tyler Lynch and the high ollie contest. The high ollie contest dragged on and finally had to end in a tie at the highest level of the haggard, nail strewn ollie bar. The boys got pop!

Despite the unfortunate start to the day, everyone had a blast riding the course that Lemi and the rest of the Gremlinz worked so hard on all week. Spirits were once again as high as the holiday intended and the day finally came to an end. A huge thanks goes out to the Gremlinz for putting together another amazing Gremlin Gamez, and this year, a happy Easter!

Lemi is still recovering at the Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno with his family by his side. To help support him and his family with medical bills, donations can be made at
