Motown Throwdown 2015 Recap and Video

Edit by Mick Posey

Snowboarding and West Virginia don’t usually go together in the same sentence. Most of the world imagines WV as bunch of inbred hillbillys living in the woods, Deliverance style. And also it’s probably the place where Truck Nutz are made. But for those who know that snowboarding exists in the south, they know that West Virginia is a wild place where the mountains are steep, the beer (and everything else) is cheap, and the people are one of a kind.

Hosted by local shop Pathfinder and Seven Springs, the Motown Throwdown is in its 9th year of debauchery.  Hundreds of WVU students come out to High St in Morgantown, WV, to watch locals figure out how to snowboard for first time in months for a 1k cash purse. No warm-ups, and no rules.
Team Yobeat was there to check out the Morgantown nightlife, Periscope the madness, and remind the riders that front flips win rail jams.

The crowd got a little thin during the skiers, maybe because the DJ switched to EDM? Photo: Ian Macy

Much to the chagrin of the alcoholics in the crowd and Kevin Kobasa (who has pledged 50% to patron if he won) 16-year-old local favorite Adam Homberg took home the cash and probably some WVU girls in the process. Photo: Ian Macy
