“DJ Matty Mo is my favorite DJ in snowboarding.” -AJ Lawson
Following his heavy ender in the new 686 movie 686 Seconds, Ryan Tarbell is officially pro! I have to mention that right away because his part was magical. The LA crowd threw its support behind the Bear local and the feeling of admiration at The Attic in Hollywood on Thursday, September 17th was palpable. It was truly Ryan’s night.
If you’ve been sleeping on the 686 team do not hit the snooze button anymore. While team projects can have a tendency to be put on the back burner if riders have other projects they are filming for — it wasn’t an issue here. Even riders without full parts had dope shots in this flick. The 686 team is just that good.
686 Seconds was lit from the start. Cameron Pierce risked impalement in the opening montage by backside 180ing over a spiked fence into a street. Some of the other death feature highlights were Ian Hart’s 50-50 gap 50-50 on a insane wooden rail feature, Atsushi Hasegawa’s boardslide on a rusty down-flat closeout, and John Murpy’s thread the needle/double tree smack that left his board stickier than an IHOP pancake. I mean I heard Vermonters like maple syrup, but there are easier ways to tap that sap.
Other stand outs for me included halfpipe riding from Shuhei Sato. Seriously. If every halfpipe contest had Shuhei Sato in it I would skip all my GED night classes to get a lesson on stylish transition riding. Max Lyons got out of his parent’s basement to get some solid clips this winter. As he may be the best light skinned caucasian snowboarder in the game right now, most of his shots were at night or during overcast days. And Ryan Tarbell definitely made me a fan with his part last night, especially when he bounced back from a gnarly fall to land a heavy stair set gap. I can’t give away all the details, but I can tell you the crowd’s reaction was that of disbelief, horror, shock, then a booming applause as he came back from something that would have ended lesser men.
In summation, don’t miss 686 Seconds when it hits the streets next month!
Canadian ripper Kody Williams had to hit up the ATM after being turned down at the bar. “Sorry we don’t accept frozen dollars, bud.”
Forest Bailey let em know he can ride everything with his clips.
John Cavan listens to the kids. Yes we Kanye bro.
Tarbell did it to them.
The most ignorant riding of the night came from Riley Nickerson. His part was beyond irresponsible. Lock up your daughters.
Max Lyons wanted to go to Burning Man, but in that heat it would have been a little too on the nose.
686 does it for the kids. They were auctioning off prints to benefit the Compton Snow Club.
Patrick McCarthy with the man of the night!
